Christmas is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan just 4 1/2
miles west of Munising, and 9 miles east of AuTrain on the shores of
Lake Superior.
Christmas, Michigan, with a population of approximately 400, was given its name by a
Munising man, Julius Thorsen, who started a roadside factory in 1939 to make
holiday gift items. The factory made a very
limited product line, including doilies and rugs, before it burned
down in 1940. The factory is long gone, but the community
of Christmas continues to grow, becoming a popular resort area and a
joy for snowmobilers.
